Developed initial idea no.2 - Thanatos

Working title: Thanatos

Approx. run time: 10 minutes

Genre: Thriller

Target Audience: 15+ with no specific gender target but it's likely to attract more men than women. People that like psychological thrillers and dialogue heavy movies.

Logline: Pick wisely/Who goes first/make your choice

Suggested cast:
   - Charles "Thanatos" Smith - A white, blonde early 30 year old male, with glasses and an average
body structure - not too stocky or big. Has to put across a similarly chilling performance to
Antony Hopkins in "Hannibal" as well as portraying a two different characters as the battle
between who's in charge of Charles' body intensifies.
   - April Smith - Innocent looking but devious white woman in her 20's. They have to be able to have
a massive change in emotions in a short space of time as this character is very dynamic and has
massive mood swings throughout the short film.
   - Alice Worthington - A female that can deliver a very emotional performance as she has to be able
to cry through a lot of the performance.
   - Kristofer "Kris" Dagursson - Brown haired male with a great range and can portrayal the feelings his character would be going through. Dialogue is the most important part of this project so they've got to be able to deliver their lines as well as their actions convincingly as he will be going through a lot of emotion throughout the performance: Grief, mischief, sorrow, hatred, innocence and love.

Setting: any dark room with a good central light, e.g. a snooker place

Order of events:
     - Hostages wake up
     - Charles walks in and April appears in a couple of scenes
     - Charles gives Kristofer the choice of who's going to get shot first
     - Kristofer is trying to negotiate as Alice panics but April is constantly influencing Charles'
decision even when he doesn't want to hurt anyone.
     - Kris says he'll get shot first
     - The gun that Kris gets shot with was one with a blank
     - Kris doesn't want to kill Alice and Charles picks a gun for him and about to shoot Alice before
Kris shouts at him to swap the guns because he things the one Charles is using has a bullet in it.
     - A bang goes off and the screen goes black not revealing the outcome.

Plot pointers:
     - A couple are kept hostage in a dark room not knowing why they are there
     - A man is willing to give the couple the chance to live as only one of the guns had a bullet in it.
     - The man is motivated by the hallucinations he has of his fiancé and doesn't want other couples to
find happiness because he never fully got it.
     - The man, Charles, is letting Kristofer decide who is going to get shot first, will he be a man and
take it for the woman, or will he be a gentleman and let ladies go first
     - If Kris goes first, Alice will pick the gun that hell get shot with, if Alice goes first, Kris will
decide what gun she'll get shot with.
     - What will Kris choose

Character profile:

     - Charles "Thanatos" Smith - a white male in his late 30's/early 40's. he uses Thanatos as a fake name to describe himself and his bloodlust. Thanatos means "He who brings death", Charles uses this name as he feels it seperates the two personalities of loving Charles and the deadly Thanatos. He's a bit of a mess with his messy mucky blond hair, glasses and stubble. Traumatised by the death of his Fiancé, April (His April moon), he has hallucinations of her telling him what to do, and he abides by the orders as he blames himself for her murder. He feels like April and him were the perfect couple and no one can and should ever be as happy as they were before she died. If they can't be together, no one can.

Alie from Season 3 of "The 100"
     - April Smith - A brunette woman in her late 20's/early 30's, with no specific race at the moment, she's the reason Charles kills. She's the hallucination Thanatos has and orders him to do things he's doesn't always agree with. April has been dead for roughly 10 years. She died when Charles took her out to dinner and a movie, even when she insisted to have a night in. She was one of many to be shot in a mass shooting done by a man who shot himself after the act. Her clothing is going to be the last outfit she wore before she dies. Whether that's going to be her hipster lumberjack look, her elegant dress or just casual cloths, is to be decided but shes going to have a blood stain on her clothing to show where she got shot. She's massively inspired by Alie from the 3rd season of "The 100", however she's more aggressive and acts more like a human than just an A.I, both with her body posture and her dialogue.

     - Alice Worthington - The scared girl that's been captured and kept hostage by Charles. the aesthetics are not very specific as it only requires a female with preferably medium to long hair.

     - Kristofer "Kris" Dagursson - the Icelandic male hostage who's been captured by the mad Charles along with his girlfriend. He's a toned brown haired man with glasses. A rational and calm guy that tries to negotiate with Charles about being set free. Although he comes off as a calm person, his attitude will change when he gets frustrated with Charles forcing him to make a choice.

Detailed story:
     - A couple wake up in a dark room with one snooker light hanging above both of them, tied up to
a chair, and a bit messed up. The woman - Alice - wakes up first in shock and looks around and
then tries to wake up the man - Kris.
     - They both scream, calling for help, only to hear other people in the next room screaming for help
as well, before a bang followed by crying and the couple go silent with shock and realising
       they're actually in danger
     - the two have a conversation about how they got there whilst the woman starts to panic a little.
     - they hear a man screaming "no!" and weeping in the next room before a door slamming
     - The door to their rooms shortly after and a man in a back trouser, white shirt with rolled up
sleeves and the first button is unbuttoned with a messy and bloody apron on. He walks in
combing his hair and is visibly nervous/skitterish/shaking.
     - when he walks in he signs as he says "Oh you're still here? you should've really left, now your
       next"
     - the couple are silent and fazed my the man before Tom asks what they are doing there and who
       the man is.
     - The man repeats what the newly emerged April says to him and says his name is Thanatos
meaning someone who has been cursed with an insatiable hunger which leads to death of himself
       and others.
     - Charles (Thanatos) is placing the guns on a tray as the couple beg to know what's going on
and ask to be set free.
     - Charles explains the situation to the couple and why he's doing what he does
     - He gives Kris the chance to be a "gentleman or a coward" as he lets him decide who's going to
       get shot first
     - after a lot of discussion and doubt, Kris agrees to get shot first only to find the gun Alice chose
       for him was a blank
     - Now Kris has a 50% chance to kill his own girlfriend.

Developed Initial Idea no.1 - Potato

Working title: The Booth / Booth / Fries / Potato

Approx. run time: 11/12 minutes

Genre: Drama

Target Audience: 12 years and older. No specific gender or race, it's for people that are willing to look at the world from different perspectives and views of others and deep thinkers. No specific demographic

Logline (Short and snappy): Step into the booth/ The booth shall set you free / Rethink everything. / Open [up] your mind. / Take a seat

Suggested cast (Who and why): a cashier at one of the restaurants, a group of background cast made up of friends or people that are in the bar/restaurant - after I ask for permission. Mardiyyah Adeka, Sam is largely based off of her and she has most of the aesthetics that is wanted for Sam's role, plus she could play a good Laura as well.

Setting: Possibly a booth in either Romeos or Five Guys or possibly in one of the Bars in Sunbridge: The wells (All in Bradford)

Order of events (Bullet point events):
   - Sam is on the bus and overhears a group of girls talk about something being "So gay" as they get off the bus
   - Sam sitting in the diner eating
   - Laura (The girl that made the initial comment) walks in alone and orders a burger and chips
   - Laura goes to sit whilst Sam watches her, and sits behind Sam
   - Sam sits looking intrigued into space, then decides to go to the toilet whilst Laura gets out her work from her bag and starts reading and writing
   - When Sam comes back, she sits opposite Laura and faces her watching her work and listen to music
   - Laura tries to ignore her but glances up to see who is sitting opposite
   - Laura eventually says "there's lots of other places to sit, why did she chose to sit opposite me?"
   - Sam responds with something along the lines of "Just looking and admiring how basic you can
be" / "What's your problem?" and dialogue is exchanged and they two discuss and talk about
controversial/big global issues like Homophobia, race, immigration, faith and education.

Sam's design inspiration
Character profile (Appearance, personality, key features, roles and contribution):
Samayn "Sam" Ashraff - a asian/black girl with an obvious bad girl attitude which shows in her body posture, short to medial black hair, slim weight and a hipster/girl power/lumberjack look with dark/autumn colour cloths. She has a number of tattoos that can be seen on her arms -because of her rolled/folded up sleeves- and on her neck. She has a couple of piercings in her ears and one in her nose. Sam's a straight forward but complicated person who basically stands up for equality in every aspect of life, however can come across as arrogant and aggressive when putting her views across to others. She will likely have the most lines in the movie and plays a huge role on how the movie will span and turn out. Will need a very good actress to fully portray her attitude and strong personality.
Laura Faye: A clearly dedicated student, she's working whilst eating her fries and burger. She's a fair skinned girl with make up on and a clean look. a more reasonable, thoughtful and compassionate Tomi Lahren.

Character/storyline inspirations:
          Samantha "Sam" Dolton:
Attitude: Mardiyyah Adeka, Tessa Thompson, Sam White,
Appearance: Chelsey Wilkinson, Emma Stone, Kehlani
          Laura Faye:
Attitude: a slightly tamed Tomi Lahren

Detailed story (as much detail as possible):
Sam is on the top floor of a double-decker bus alone on her way to town and she's listening to her music. A girl (Laura) is behind her texting on phone and later picks up the phone on a call, as she leaves the top floor of the bus she says "That's so gay" to the person she's on the phone to (1 min 30 secs). Later that day Sam is sitting in a half empty restaurant and Laura walks in and orders something to eat, Sam recognises her immediately. Laura buys fries and a burger and when her order comes, she sits in the booth/seats behind Sam. Sam picks up a chip from her plate and looks at in a deep state of thought as she considers to go back and approach Laura who's getting her books out of her bag to try and study. Sam goes to the toilet but when she returns, she sits opposite to Laura. Just looking at Laura makes Laura visually uncomfortable, but she tries her hardest to ignore Sam. Sam keeps looking at Laura as she tries to focus on her work until Sam takes one of Laura's chips from her plate. "do you mind?" is Laura's first response and Sam reacts with "Do you?". Laura has a problem with Sam's attitude and Sam knows it (4/5 mins). The two then go on to talk about the following in this order: Homophobia > 11th oct - not confining it to 1 day
                                       > why is being gay still such a big national issue/topic?
                                       > is being gay a choice
                                       > what is love?
                                       > what is beauty?
                                       > is homophobia the same as/on par with racial discrimination/racism
                                       > gender equality
                                       > (7/8 mins)
Racism > it is still going on in the 21st century
                              > "Asian is the new black"
                              > mention some of the people that have been wrongly killed/stereotyped because of their race and appearance
                              > examples of racism e.g. real life events and racial slurs
                              > (9 mins)
Immigration > should countries allow immigrants into their countries
                                      > L: immigrants are taking all our jobs. S: when was the last time you saw an immigrant take a/your job?
                                      > yourself or morals first
                                      > S: greed is the problem with the world
                                      > (10 mins)
Faith > who's going to judge people for the things they do [a play on "only God can judge you"]
                          > (11/12 mins)
Education > how pressure can make people do stupid things.
                                  > (13 mins)

Laura doesn't want to leave the talk because she is intrigued by Sam's perspective on things and wants to prove her wrong, as she's super arrogant.

Sam repeatedly mentions her potato theory. How a potato can come in lots of different colours and sizes and end up being different products e.g Wedges, chips, fries, crisps, mash but still edible.

A waiter (who's face we don't see) keeps coming to ask the pair to be a bit quieter

Ends with the waiter coming over and asking if they'd finished eating and Laura ordering "Potato...any kind, prepared in any way, she doesn't care."

Initial ideas

Genre, Synopsis

Comedy - Similar to Seinfeld and HIMYM, a story being told by a person telling others in a booth at a restaurant, pub or on a train. potentially more people come around and ask questions about the story as time goes on. Sort of like an SNL sketch. The story will be about how Zak - the protagonist is always late to every event, including the meeting in the booth, with the friends quizzing Zak on the odd description that he gives them.

Sci-fi - A new president of America (Or a made up country) has just been voted into power, however  with some sources saying they cheated and the fact they had less overall votes (Collegial voting system), the country is in turmoil and almost purge like (See video for Stephen - Crossfire for visual influences). So the movie follows a family trying to escape the riots in the city, parents trying to get their kids ready and drive away

Drama - A non-linear realism drama about a person suffering from depression, frequent flashbacks to what life was like for them before and a backing of a poem. It's intended to be a really sad thing to watch, especially with the colour scheme and constant subtle background music. This film will have minimal dialogue to add to it's intension of making people think and reflecting about the topic of depression.

Drama (with a hint of romance) - A woman - Laura - walks into a take away/restaurant (Five Guys, Romeos or one of the Sunbridge Wells bars, bfd) and a woman - Sam - is sitting down eating chips and watching her order food. Laura sits in the stall next to Sam. Sam sits waiting, thinking about whether to go back and talk to her or not whilst eating their last chips and finishing their drink, and decides to go to the toilet. When she comes out, she sits directly across the Laura in her booth. Laura looking a bit puzzled at Sam but says nothing as she tries to ignore Sam looking intrigued at her face. Dialogue is finally initiated by Laura's frustration and confusion and a deep conversation happens between the two women. Laura is a smart, clean and polite girl with an obvious darker side. Sam is a ruder, smart and more hipster girl with the bandana headband, and several tattoos on her arms (inspiration from Kehlani (Looks) and Sam White (Attitude) from Dear White People) the two women end up discussing racial, sexual and gender equality with cut scenes of news reports and flashbacks of the things they mention, as Sam tries to convince Laura that she's always right (inspiration - Newsroom ep1. scene 1) and the tone will be similar to the movie "Dope" without all the drugs obviously.
The film is largely inspired by this clip from the very controversial movie: Dear White People

Action - A boy who's just discovered he has superpowers is being hunted down and has to try lose the mysterious people chasing him, and he doesn't know how to use his powers so he can't hurt the people. The boy will be chased through fields and into a farmers barn where he'll start using his powers but not know how to properly control them.

Thriller - one mad man, one room, one hostage and one hallucination (inspiration: A beautiful mind).

Drama - Following the story of a boy who finds it hard to fit in because he always wears a bike helmet.
