Survey Results

Q1

For the first question I asked the simple question of what was the gender of everyone taking the survey, with the results being 50/50. This allows me to analyse each question evenly rather than guessing if one gender answered a certain way compared to the other.

Q2

This just allows me to see what age the typical people answering the questions are and allows me to see a trend, especially since the vast majority of the people are between the ages of 16 and 21 In addition, all the people that answered the questions are part of my target audience for age.

Q3

Possibly the most important question in all of this, it is good to see that everyone who answered this is willing and wanting the issues that I'll raise in my film to be part of mainstream media and think they are important topics. Although this is great as I know that there's a definite audience for my project, it does add a bit of pressure on me as I now know that it has to portray multiple perceptions of each issue I'll raise.

Q4

72% of the people want the characters to be relatable to them in some way, and considering that 83% of the audience should be able to relate to the two characters - Sam and Laura - the film should also be more appealing to them and hopefully make this film a success.

Q5

One of the things I spent a lot of time considering and debating about when writing the developed ideas was what gender and characteristics the characters would have. I wanted to make a film that was more focused on a gender that doesn't get as much limelight in films and media so I chose female characters, one of which represents minorities as she's Asian, Muslim and a lesbian whilst the other (Laura) represents a wider majority of the country as she's white, Christian and straight. I could've chosen to do one male and one female but with the dialogue I was going to put in, I didn't want the audience to think that one of the messages was that one gender is more righteous or better than the other. So it's refreshing to see that 55.56% of people aren't too bothered about the character's genders.

Q6
This question is designed to give me an idea of what type of films the likely audience watch in terms of dramas, so if a lot of people watched highly political and dialogue heavy shows like "The Newsroom" I know they'll likely be a fan of the film. This also allows me to see how big the demand of shows similar to my film are. On average a third of the people that answered this question watch or have watched shows and films with a similar tone to what mine will have, showing that there is some people that will be willing to watch it.

Q7

It's encouraging to see that three of my priorities for this film - Characteristics of characters, message and chemistry between characters - are part of the top five important factors to what makes a good movie according to everyone that answered this question. Although lighting is a joint last, it's going to be vital for me to use it in order to set the right tone and make the film look as good as it can do because of the naturally dark setting it's going to be filmed in.

Q8

This is an important question because I know that the audience will like the lighting and sound to reflect the mood and atmosphere of the film and each scene. Although this should be an obvious factor when making a film, not all films do it for various reasons, usually to create a contrast with the characters.

Q9

My film contains a lot of verbal conflict but has a big message about people being similar and equal just but only being separated by their views on certain matters so it's important for me to end the film on a good note to promote this message. The fact that no one wants the film to have a definite sad ending helps me as I know that the majority of people (77.78%) want the ending to fit the type, style and message of the film.

Overall, I think that these questions have helped the process of planning as it reinforces a lot of the ideas that I had and promises that there is a market out there for my film, especially when a lot of the results have shown promise of interest from people. In addition the responses from the people will help me change and alter things that wont be appealing to the general audience, this is vital to me since I am doing this film independently so I'll have no support during planning and filming for changes to improve the film so it's vital I get as much response beforehand.
